our values

Materials

We strive to incorporate more responsibly certified and sustainable materials in our products and packaging including recycled, renewable, regenerated, and certified preferred/natural materials. When we can clearly understand what our products are made of and where they come from, it allows us to make better sourcing decisions.

Packaging

We have removed packaging materials where possible, replacing with higher recyclable materials and re-engineering to reduce waste.

Packaging Lifecycle Assessment (LCA)

Our mission is to design more sustainable product and utilize more preferred materials (including recycled, renewable, regenerated, and certified preferred/natural materials) in every aspect of our products - including our packaging materials. Product packaging is an important element as it is the first part of the finished good to be disposed of by the consumer. We deem 100% of our packaging as waste because of its short lifespan and as a result, we have looked critically at the environmental impact of our packaging materials.

Packaging is a multi-functional vehicle that serves many purposes: it is used to contain and protect the contents inside the package, and serves as a critical logistical tool throughout the entire supply chain.

We are proud that Sanuk's footwear packaging uses only 4.45% virgin plastic and have been trialing ways to reduce plastic packaging (poly bags) in Sanuk footwear that aligns with supply chain challenges.

Responsible Cotton

We are committed to sourcing cotton produced in a way that is better for the people who produce it and the environment in which it grows.

In FY22, Sanuk used 134,659 lbs of responsible cotton fibers. When comparing the impact of conventional cotton raw fiber usage to the same usage of responsible cotton fibers, Sanuk saved over 225,000 lbs of carbon equivalent emissions, 1.28 billion liters of water and 855,000 MJ of energy.

Sustainable Hemp

Hemp is an incredibly sustainable and eco-friendly textile. It uses less water, organically replenishes the soil, thrives in small places, and generally is not known to require the use of pesticides or herbicides.

In FY22, Sanuk footwear used 58,071 lbs of hemp. When comparing the impact of conventional cotton raw fiber usage to the same usage of hemp. Sanuk saved over 346,000lbs of CO2 eq. emissions, 1.59 million liters of water and 1.21 million MJ of energy.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane is a swift-growing, rainwater-fed, renewable material that captures CO2 from the atmosphere and sequesters carbon.

Sugarcan EVA

Sanuk is beginning to experiment with utilization of sugarcane EVA and has been using recycled EVA since FY2019.

Recycled Polyester

We utilize recycled materials like rPET, comprised of repurposed plastic water bottles and post-industrial polyester fiber and textile scrap, without sacrificing our trademark comfort and casual style.

rPET is comprised predominantly of plastic water bottles and other recycled PET packaging waste. In FY22, Sanuk used 51,761 lbs of rPET across all of its products, which is the equivalent of over 1.38 million PET water bottles. Sanuk has additionally utilized over 38,400 lbs of post-industrial polyester fabric scrap across all products it produced in FY22. To date, Sanuk has repurposed over 3 million PET water bottles and over 70,000 lbs of post industrial polyester fiber and textile scrap.

Vegan

All Sanuk vegan footwear is carefully made with absolutely no animal products or byproducts.

We appreciate each and every one of our consumers and recognize that, just like us, our customers have different needs, come from different backgrounds, and have different views. When using animal products, we are committed to doing so responsibly and make sure we work with partners that abide by our Ethical Sourcing and Animal Welfare Policy.

Machine Washable

There's nothing more sustainable than making your favorite shoes last longer.

As long as the upper on your Sanuk isn't leather, a friendly machine wash on cold should do the trick. Simply remove the sock liner, throw 'em in, add a color safe detergent and spin to win.

But wait! Don't throw Sanuks in the dryer. Instead, let Mother Nature work her magic and let your beloved pair air dry... and presto, your kicks are good as new!

If you're rockin' a leather pair, you'll want to opt for a good spot cleaning with an off-the-shelf leather cleaner. Elbow grease will also come in handy.

Don't lose them, re-use them. Many of our shoes are machine washable for fresh kicks with an extended lifespan.

Responsible Leather

We don't use leather in our products often, but, when we do, we make sure it comes exclusively from certified Leather Working Group tanneries.

LWG promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices within the leather industry. Leather provides premium durability and long-lasting style.
