Designing with Pride

Designing with Pride

Meet the Designer: Maggie Johnson

This year, we partnered with PPF and LGBTQ+ artist Maggie Johnson, to design a unique collection of inclusive styles inspired by the vibrancy of the LGBTQ+ community.

As part of our collaboration with Pacific Pride Foundation, Sanuk will donate $10K in June and an additional $3 per pair sold to help Pacific Pride Foundation ensure a vibrant, visible and thriving LGBTQ+ community.

Follow along as we host a Q&A session with Maggie Johnson, the designer of Sanuk’s FA22 collaboration with Pacific Pride Foundation

Q: What inspired this design?

A: For the print I was super inspired by the vibrancy and authenticity of the LGBTQ Community. I was thinking a lot about self-authenticity, but then also what it means to be part of a community and to be seen and be held.

Q: This print isn’t stereotypically Pride-y. Was that an intentional design choice?

A: I just wanted to make an effort with this print to make it something that really speaks to Pride, but is also something you’d want to wear everyday. I think incorporating the organic shapes and the very raw mark-making to it lends this sense of humanity and vitality to the work.

Q: We love that! Anything else you want to tell us about your process?

A: I just wanted to create a print that really felt like it came from me and my hand and had more of a authentic human feel where you can really feel the energy and vitality in the work. I think that is such an important part of art.

Q: How do you want people to feel when wearing Sanuk’s Pride collection?

A: I would love for people to feel inspired and feel like they can just be themselves in this print in all the weird wonderful ways that you are.
